Friday, February 21, 2009 - Beginning MySQL Database

This month, we will be discussing how to create, populate, and maintain a MySQL database. This will be done from the command line. In order to "play along", you will need to have MySQL installed.

To install MySQL 5 on a default ubuntu installation type the following command in a terminal window:

sudo apt-get install mysql-server

Towards the end of the install it will prompt you to set the root password for MySQL or you can leave it blank for none.

Databases can be used to catalog recipes, books, CDs, maintenance schedules, contact lists...they are very handy.
